CHHS Provides COOP Training for UMB School of Nursing
On November 9th Senior Policy Analyst Eric Oddo, in coordination with UMB Environmental Health and Safety, facilitated a Continuity of Operations (COOP) Planning workshop for the University of Maryland School of Nursing (UMSON).
COOP Planning is an organizational effort to ensure the capability exists to scale-down business operations and seamlessly continue essential functions under adverse conditions.
The workshop was attended by over 20 staff members from UMSON, including Dean Jane Kirchsling, and key managers from Communications, Research, Information Technology and Administration.
Participants collaboratively performed a comprehensive analysis of UMSON’s mission essential functions, resource requirements, orders of succession for leadership, and contingency plans for the following three types of emergency scenarios: (1) a construction accident which incapacitated the School of Nursing’s main facility, (2) a campus-wide closure due to heavy snowfall, and (3) a food poisoning outbreak which created staffing shortages.
In the coming months, similar workshops will be held for the Schools of Dentistry, Law, Medicine, Social Work and Pharmacy. They represent the next step in an on-going campus-wide effort for UMB to enhance its emergency preparedness efforts through holistic training, exercise and evaluation programs.
