Evacuation Workshop for Central Maryland Regional Hospitals

The Exercise and Training team delivered a workshop on August 8, 2013 involving medical providers from Baltimore City and Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Harford and Howard counties, which opened a dialogue on hospital-wide evacuations in Central Maryland. The Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems’ Region III Health and Medical Task Force and the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene sponsored the day-long event. Participants heard from subject matter experts, participated in a panel discussion on roles and responsibilities, and talked through a facilitated mock evacuation of Johns Hopkins Hospital in downtown Baltimore.

A variety of regional coordination challenges surrounding the evacuation were presented to attendees, due to the size, location, and diverse patient requirements of the scenario. The more than 100 participants came away with a better understanding of essential plans and relationships needed prior to an actual hospital-wide evacuation.
